Wings of Desire storms into Derby contention with 'freakish' victory at York 



Trainer John Gosden described Wings of Desire as ‘freakish’ after the colt leapt to the head of the Investec Derby betting with a neck win from Deauville in the Betfred Dante Stakes at York.
So convinced was Gosden that Wings Of Desire, now 4-1 joint favourite with Chester Vase winner US Army Ranger, would not make the Derby that he scratched him from the Classic at the March 7 forfeit stage. The colt only entered serious work later that month.
His racecourse debut came when placed in a Newmarket maiden came a month before the Dante and, in between, he landed a Wolverhampton maiden.
