Volunteers desperately wanted to save factory hens from slaughter - or they face being turned into pies

Volunteers are being desperately sought to save a group of factory hens.
The hens, whose best egg-producing years are behind them, tragically face slaughter.
The animals will be slaughtered when they reach around one-and-a-half years old.
This is, according to our sister title LeicestershireLive, when the number of eggs they produce begins to reduce.
But the birds can live for more than 10 years and usually keep producing eggs until they are six or seven.
