Vince Cable to stand down as Liberal Democrat leader in May
 

Sir Vince Cable has announced he will stand down as leader of the Liberal Democrats in May.
The 75-year-old had previously said he would resign after Brexit had been ‘resolved or stopped’ – but said it was now clear that ‘may never happen’.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the Lib Dem admitted he had presided over a ‘gradual’ rather than a ‘spectacular’ recovery of the party since taking over in 2017.
Sir Vince told the newspaper he will remain as an MP but wanted to step aside to allow ‘the next generation’ to take over.
