The day Deadly Doug sacked Big Ron - and 'left by the back door'

For a soccer godfather who relished the nickname ‘Deadly’, Sir Doug Ellis wasn’t known for being sheepish.
But I swear he had that look on his face when I quizzed him about the sacking of Big Ron Atkinson, the Brummie-born flamboyant former Manchester United manager who had finally put some silverware in Doug’s cupboard.
Although Villa won the League Cup in 1977, Division One in 1981-82 and the European Cup in 1982, Sir Doug was chairman of Villa from 1968-75 and 1982-2006.
