Surge in number of Leicester kids in care triggers massive council overspend
 

A sharp rise in the number of kids being taken into care in Leicester has led to the city council’s children’s services department overspending by millions of pounds.
Latest figures released by the city council show there were 703 youngsters in care in December – a rise from 660 at the end of March 2017.
Officials say that increase, as well as the fact some of the children require very costly external residential care, has meant the department has overspent its budget by £3.5 million in the year running up to April.
