A ‘Robin Hood’ ex-council boss has been jailed for 18 months for defrauding the local authority out of £300,000 to help ‘vulnerable’ people.
Stuart Burrell, 43, used his position within Southend Borough Council to forge invoices and letters from housing suppliers.
Basildon Crown Court heard Burrell, who was once a world-record breaking escapologist, did not benefit personally from the fraud.
He reportedly did it to help ‘put a roof over people’s heads’.
Burrell had been working as a private sector housing manager for Southend Council between February 2017 and January 2018.
