Nadal suffered a knee injury towards the end of 2017 that saw him pull out of two warm-up tournaments ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year.
The world No 1 appeared to show no ill effects during the first week of the Australian Open but eventually retired in the fifth set of his quarter-final clash with Marin Cilic, citing a problem with a muscle in his leg.
Nadal has since insisted he will not miss more than a few weeks of practice but blamed the punishing schedule and surfaces of the ATP Tour for yet another injury.
