For within the hushed, leather-upholstered tearoom of the House of Lords, Baron Coe of Ranmore, in the County of Surrey, the man who successfully masterminded the bid to bring the Olympic Games to London this summer, offered a startling submission.
'I am not even sure I would have been in the sport a year later; I am not sure I'd have gone on,' said Coe.
'If I had not won the 1500m, Steve Ovett would have put me in a box, historically.'
