Ms Bonelli, whose Lega Nord could govern in coalition with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia if results go the party’s way, told CNBC: “The Mediterranean was a cradle of culture, trade and tourism but it’s become a place where human traffickers bring lots of people and give them false hope.”
Ms Bonelli wants Italy to regulate migration with a new law to block arrivals.
