'It's difficult to imagine that 62 years ago fans would flock to football matches on Christmas Day'



On December 25, 1956, Derby County met Scunthorpe United at the Baseball Ground in a Third Division North game. The Rams won 4-0 with two goals from Dennis Woodhead and one each from Reg Ryan and Geoff Barrowcliffe, who scored from the penalty spot.
The majority of the 11,266 crowd dispersed happily enough. And a tradition ended. It was the last time the Rams played at home on Christmas Day.
In 2018, when Britain virtually shuts down on Christmas Day, it is difficult to imagine that 62 years ago, tens of thousands of football fans would have been flocking to matches on this most treasured... read more
