Iraq: Netanyahu backs Kurds’ bid for independent state

ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that Israel supports Iraq Kurdish bids for an independent state.
His comments came a day after Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Masoud Barzani vowed to press ahead with a September 25 referendum on independence despite the Baghdad parliament declaring it unconstitutional.
MPs authorised the central government to “take all measures” to preserve Iraq’s unity, though roughly 50 Kurdish MPs walked out of the 328-seat chamber before the vote.
