'I'm heir to real-life Downton Abbey', says retired headteacher
 

Gordon Pidgeon claims to be a member of Downton's real family and, according to him, his lineage is fact not fiction. He believes his great-grandfather Eli, born in 1854, was the illegitimate son of the fourth Earl of Carnarvon.
Mr Pidgeon says many things support his claim. His family once lived near Highclere Castle in Hampshire, which provides the backdrop for the ITV1 drama, and they shared a striking resemblance to the aristocrats.
