A poor night for England but it is Liverpool and Arsenal who may suffer the repercussions. Stuart Pearce is adamant he requires Andy Carroll, Jack Wilshire and the finest under-21 talent available at the European Championship in June and, after a laboured performance and merited defeat to Iceland, few can argue his squad can flourish without them.
Iceland were the more incisive and resilient side throughout as absentees cost Pearce's team while, on the plus side, strengthened the manager's hand for maximum support from the Premier League this summer.
