Calls for Europe to ‘defend democracy’ on 30th anniversary of Berlin Wall fall
Angela Merkel called on Europe to defend ‘democracy and freedom’ as she commemorated the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The German Chancellor joined thousands in celebrating the ‘pivotal’ day in history, which brought down the end of Communism in eastern Europe.
The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to stop the flood of people living in Communist East Germany moving in hope of a better life in the liberal West.
It divided Berlin for 28 years before the border finally opened on November 9, 1989.
