Birmingham criminals could avoid jail amid plans to scrap short prison sentences

More than 3,000 offenders in the West Midlands could avoid jail if ministers go ahead with plans to scrap short prison sentences.
Prisons minister Rory Stewart said at the weekend that the Ministry of Justice is considering banning prison sentences of less than six months in England and Wales.
Offenders could potentially be given community sentences instead.
Ministry of Justice data shows that, of those convicted in the West Midlands police force area in 2017, 3,108 were given custodial sentences of six months or less.
