The Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics made 2012 a year to remember. But little of the joy crossed over into the nation's finances as Britain endured another year of austerity. A combination of flat wages, scarce overtime, public sector pay caps and low returns on deposits kept household incomes low, even as fuel, food and energy costs rose.
As the year began, retail price inflation was still running at almost five per cent, and it has only fallen slowly to reach three per cent last month, still outpacing most wage rises.
