Controversial plans for a huge surge in student numbers in an already crowded city centre threatens to deepen the town-gown divide.
Durham University is launching a 10-year expansion plan, which will see almost 6,000 extra students – a rise of 30 per cent – move to the city.
The growing number of students flocking to the World Heritage site has already sparked concern among the city’s permanent residents, who say they are hard-pressed to find homes in a student-dominated rental market.
