Will Leicestershire be forced to elect a mayor nobody wants?



Leicestershire may be forced into having an unwanted election to choose a mayor for the city and county in return for getting devolved powers from the Government, it has been warned.
Whitehall officials are currently considering a bid from Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council and the area's seven districts to set up a combined authority to assume greater responsibilities locally from the Government.
The combined authority would not mean the abolition of any existing councils but simply closer co-operation between them.
