Why were Newcastle shoppers dodging gusts of dust on Newgate Street today?
 

The contractor demolishing a city centre landmark building says it is doing all it can to stop dust from the site filling the air.
On Tuesday, strong wind blew dust from the Newgate Centre demolition site in Newcastle into shoppers’ faces as they walked down Newgate Street.
Total Demolition, the firm tearing down the 1960s shopping centre and hotel, says it is spending £3,000 a week to keep the dust at bay.
Preventative measures include “dust cannons” which spray mist into the air to add weight to the dirt so it drops the floor.
