Mertesacker, who joined the Gunners in 2011, had been vice-captain to Mikel Arteta at the Emirates, so naming the defender as the club's new captain seemed like the logical choice. 
However, Mertesacker had just been ruled out for four months with a knee injury, meaning Wenger was in the market for a new centre-back.
