1923: Zorya was originally founded as Metalist, a club for the factory workers to play in a stadium built by Vladimir Lenin in the city of Luhansk in what is now eastern Ukraine.
1940: The club was dissolved due to the World War II but was reformed in 1948 under a new name, Avanhard.
1960: After the liquidation of Avanhard in 1959, Zorya - which literally means ‘dawn’ - was formed.
1964: The Soviet Football Federation decided Zorya Luhansk would be merged with a local university team to form the club which survives today.
