Autumn - season of mists and mellow fruitfulness – and conkers ... the game so loved by generations of British schoolboys until health and safety executives banned it from the nation's playgrounds, writes Anton Rippon.
Where once late September saw hordes of small boys hurling sticks at horse chestnut trees in a bid to dislodge the fruit, children, it seems, now have better things to do than thread string through the nuts, hoping that somewhere they will have a "sixer" – a conker that smashes six others.
