Rumours of a sinkhole in Blaydon were sparked by emergency electrical repairs after workmen dug a hole overnight.
One lane was shut on the A695 near the Scotswood Bridge heading towards Newcastle by a utility company was forced to dig a hole to fix a fault on Thursday night.
Motorists on Friday morning were stuck in three-mile-long rush-hour traffic in Blaydon heading towards Newcastle with radio reports blaming a sinkhole.
