Catalan leader says region has won statehood
CATALAN President Carles Puigdemont insisted yesterday that he was not seeking “a traumatic break” with Spain, explaining that he sought “a new understanding with the Spanish state.”
He was speaking after the national police and paramilitary Civil Guard injured 900 people in a brutal attempt to disrupt and prevent Sunday’s Catalonia independence referendum.
Mr Puigdemont said that he was setting up a commission to investigate Sunday’s violence and was taking legal action against national police.
