In a remarkable intervention the former EU Commissioner Mario Monti - who also served as Italy’s unelected prime minister for two years - laid into his successor Matteo Renzi and urged voters to reject his proposed reforms. 
It will be seen as an extremely risky ploy by the former technocrat because Mr Renzi has vowed to resign if he loses the referendum, sparking a general election in which the eurosceptic Five Star Movement would be expected to make huge gains.
