Wartime Great Escape hero Herbert Martin Massey honoured at Hilton birthplace
 

One of Derbyshire's most famous sons has been honoured in his home village of Hilton.
Herbert Martin Massey played a key role in one of the most famous incidents of the Second World War, authorising what became known as the Great Escape.
In January 1898, Herbert was born at Hilton House, in Hilton. Throughout a distinguished career, he served in the air force during both world wars, finally achieving the rank of Air Commodore.
Wounded during the First World War, he lost half of his leg but was among a small band of amputees who remained in the RAF and continued flying.
