Unexploded device near London City Airport is a German 1,000lb bomb
 

The unexploded bomb which shut down London City Airport was a 1,100lb German bomb dropped in World War Two. 
Newham Council warned work to deal with the 1.5 metre device it would last until Tuesday, with people in neighbouring streets told to leave their homes.
Some residents have refused to be evacuated and authorities are still trying to persuade them.
The huge scale of the bomb can be seen in the video below, which shows what happened when a bomb half the size was detonated in Germany:
