Your editorial (14 October) rightly points out that adult social care is underfunded but concludes that integration of the two services is the key to the problem. When I was a director of social services we never left people in hospital to save money if we had suitable provision, but we didn’t always have either enough staff or residential spaces available because, unlike the NHS, we were not allowed to overspend our budget.
