What will future generations think when they see images of the ‘Dunston Rocket’?
Even today, it seems like a construction from a very different age.
While many of Tyneside’s buildings have stood proudly for decades, or in some cases centuries, the controversial Gateshead tower block had a lifespan of just 40 years.
Designed and built in the ‘brutalist’ architectural style of the day, building work on Derwent Tower began in 1968, and the project was complete by 1971.
Yet only four decades later it would be razed to the ground.
