Transgender engineer relives day she turned up at naval base as a man then clocked off as her true self
 

ELAINE Gallagher describes perfectly her sense of transitioning to a transgender woman.
She said: “Imagine you were left-handed and had been forced to write right-handed all of your life and then suddenly you are allowed to write left-handed.
“Your writing might be atrocious but it feels comfortable.
“That’s how I felt, transitioning.”
The engineer-turned-writer was nine when she demanded to know why she wasn’t allowed to wear a skirt like her sister.
