Traffic police numbers fall in Northumbria and Durham leading to concerns over more road deaths
 

The number of dedicated traffic police officers has fallen in the North East, an investigation has revealed.
The Press Association submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to all 45 forces in the UK asking how many traffic officers they had compared to five and 10 years ago.
The results reveal cuts have accelerated in the past five years with numbers falling 24% since 2012, while overall the number is down 30% since 2007.
In the Northumbria area, the number of officers initially increased from 101 in 2007 to 171 in 2012, however they then fell to 133 this year.
