Shakespeare, in the twilight of his career, was inspired not just by travellers’ tales of exotic lands encountered on the latest voyages of discovery but by the increased possibilities for spectacle possible in the new indoor playhouses and, in particular, by the masques pioneered by his fellow playwright Ben Jonson and the court architect Inigo Jones.
