By putting familiar characters in fresh sketches Tate is playing safe. But the fact that she performs 18 different roles herself with just a change of costume, some prosthetic make-up and a closetful of wigs shows how versatile she is. Tate’s comedy is based on close observation and her characters seem like exaggerated refugees from the plays of Mike Leigh.
