Gareth Southgate stood out the moment he arrived at Crystal Palace’s old Mitcham training ground.
He was a slight, unassuming 14-year-old from Crawley, well- spoken and wearing a cardigan. It was the mid-1980s and he was surrounded by rough-and-tumble south London boys.
Yet, as Sportsmail has been told this week by those who have known Southgate at different stages in his 46 years, the man who will take charge of England for the first time on Saturday has a steely core that belies his nice-guy exterior.
