The incredible moment a 'monster' ant snaps its spring-loaded jaws 700 times faster than the blink of an eye



The trap-jaw ant is famous for its powerful mandibles, which it uses to snatch prey, fend off predators, cradle eggs and even catapult itself from danger.
The insects boast fearsome jaws that snap shut in about half a millisecond - 700 times faster than the blink of an eye.
Using high-speed cameras, scientists have now revealed the secret behind some of these ants' lightning-speed mandibles.
The videos show how the insect's unique set of muscles and joints forms a spring-loaded system that researchers say works 'like a crossbow'.
