An ancient scar has long hidden beneath the surface of the American Midwest.
Using a new technique to combine different types of seismological data, researchers have now visualized the Earth’s interior with unprecedented detail, providing a glimpse at the unseen Midcontinent Rift that nearly tore the continent apart.
The researchers say the feature was once the site of what could be ‘the largest outflowing of lava in our planet’s history,’ followed by a compression event that squeezed the area until it became much thicker than the surrounding crust.
