Our planet has been shaped over millions of years by geological processes, but it is not the only one.
Mars is also covered in mountains, plateaus and canyons that reveal hints of a geological past involving vast oceans, mega-tsunamis and super volcanoes.
Now researchers have worked out the mechanisms that shaped some of the deepest canyons on both Earth and Mars, and the answer lies in catastrophic floods.
