The Dinner review: A frustrating misfire
 

Its subject matter is provocative and the star cast is rock solid. 
Disappointingly, it feels stagey, contrived and overcooked. 
The dinner in question is a family gathering at the swankiest of restaurants. 
Self-important congressman Stan Lohman (Richard Gere) arrives with his second wife Katelyn (Rebecca Hall) while their guests are Stan’s grumpy, resentful schoolteacher brother Paul (Steve Coogan) and his long-suffering wife Claire (Laura Linney).  
The purpose of the evening is to decide how to respond to a horrible crime committed by their children.
