A North East shoe empire owes its existence to Charles Clinkard getting injured during the Battle of the Somme .
In 1916, the original Charles Clinkard was badly hurt while fighting for the Grenadier Guards in the brutal First World War battle.
He was honourably discharged and awarded the Silver War Badge for his bravery.
According to the Imperial War Museum , the badge is “a pin designed to be worn on civilian clothes after early discharge from the army. It was first issued in 1916, when it was also retrospectively awarded to those already discharged since August 1914”.
