A teenage rugby player on trial for assault after punching a boy on the opposing team says he was defending himself.
A 16-player brawl erupted during a national cup tie between Halton Farnworth Hornets and Ince Rose Bridge’s Under 18 teams.
Prosecutors say George Crosby, then 17, from Widnes , was stood watching the fight when he was approached by Alex Prince, then 18.
They allege that Mr Crosby did not see Prince coming, and that the now 19-year-old punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground and causing him to swallow his tongue.
