Tata Steel facing trial over incident that left four contractors exposed to chemical



Tata Steel, the former Indian owners of the Scunthorpe steel works, are being prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive for three offences relating to the operation of a newly-installed benzole plant at the Appleby coke ovens.
The case will go for trial by jury at Hull Crown Court on November 1 after an initial hearing before North Lincolnshire magistrates in Scunthorpe on September 29.
The company Is accused of failing to prevent a major accident following the release of benzole, causing a dangerous vapour cloud to form.
