The former Bayern Munich midfielder was stretchered off during Saturday’s 1-1 home draw against West Brom with scans revealing his hamstring injury will keep him out until December.
It is the latest setback for Moyes who has yet to see the Black Cats win in the Premier League since succeeding Sam Allardyce in the summer.
He is already without long-term absentees Seb Larsson, Fabio Borini and Vito Mannone while Lee Cattermole missed the Baggies’ game with back trouble.
