Student Darnell Humes learnt a hard lesson in drink driving after running into trouble because he could not afford a taxi.
Nottingham magistrates heard that he was spotted driving his Fiat Punto at 70mph along Clifton Boulevard, where there is a 50mph limit.
Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said: "Police thought the vehicle was going in excess of the speed limit.
"The vehicle was stopped shortly afterwards and officers smelt alcohol coming from the defendant," he added.
