Stone Age people feasted on RODENTS: Vole fossils reveal the animals were eaten 5,000 years ago



Rodents might not seem like your idea of the most appetising meal.
But around 5,000 years ago people living in the Stone Age settlement of Skara Brae cooked and ate the creatures, and used them as food on long journeys.
This is according to a new study, published today, which claims this evidence is the earliest example of humans in Europe using rodents as food.
WHAT THE STUDY FOUND The team looked at the remains of at least 1,674 rodents, in 29,553 skeletal fragments, including 8,360 isolated teeth.
Most of the remains were from voles, a kind of small rodent.
