Stoke City: Checkatrade Trophy experiment should be here to stay – despite Morecambe beating



STOKE City legend Denis Smith has defended the controversial Checkatrade Trophy revamp as a huge learning curve for emerging players.
Stoke under-21s were bolstered with the addition of five senior players last night – but still lost their second game of the competition 3-1 at League Two Morecambe.
Captain Liam Edwards was sent off for lunging challenge in the first half and Charlie Adam and Co could not turn the tide in front of a crowd of just 686.
Their progress now hinges on a final group game at the bet365 Stadium against Bury next month.
