Spit and bite guards used 40 times by West Midlands Police since December



Special spit and bite guards have been used 40 times by West Midlands Police since they were introduced last month - including on a 15-year-old suspect.
The mesh face guards are designed to stop offenders and suspects attacking police and they have been issued to 4,500 officers since December 12, 2017.
They were introduced in response to calls from the Police Federation for greater protection for our cops. In 2016 a total of 231 West Midlands officers were spat on leaving them at risk of infection from disease.
