Spanking rates plummet: The number of parents punishing their kids with physical force has HALVED in 20 years, figures reveal 



Fewer parents are spanking their children, figures published by the US board of pediatrics reveal.
Today, 21 percent of middle-income mothers admit to hitting their child as a form of punishment.
That is a significant drop down from 1988, when almost half of American families (46 percent) used physical force as a method of discipline.
And now 81 percent of mothers endorse using a 'time-out' as the best form of punishment, up from 41 percent two decades ago.
