South Africa: Teachers hail ANC plan to scrap hated annual tests



SOUTH Africa’s liberation movement welcomed educational improvements yesterday in the face of an increasingly militant opposition.
Teacher’s union Sadtu hailed the Department of Basic Education’s decision to scrap the Annual National Assessment tests that teachers had vehemently opposed.
Instead the department will institute a new three-yearly systematic assessment.
But the opposition Democratic Alliance-controlled Western Cape province is still planning to privatise schooling there, using testing to commodify education.
