Sinister clowns: Derby expert explains our irrational fears
 

An expert in anxiety has explained why people sometimes fear clowns even if they aren't meant to look scary.
The University of Derby's Dr Frances Maratos spoke as the bizarre craze of dressing up as creepy clowns and scaring people appeared to have reached Derbyshire. On Tuesday (October 11) Police launched a hunt after a child on his way to school in Chesterfield told his teachers a clown "waved" at him from a park.
She explained that even the look of a usual clown has the potential to cause anxiety by tapping into the "primitive" part of our minds.
