The word Cockney is synonymous with jellied eels, rhyming slang, EastEnders – and Joe Brown, showbiz’s enduring cheeky chappie. So it comes as a surprise when the spiky-haired guitarist tells me he wasn’t born in east London.
In fact, he wasn’t even born within 100 miles of it. “I was born in Swarby in Lincolnshire,” says Joe, 75, “and was evacuated to London during the war when I was two – my bloody train south was empty. I went to live with my Uncle Joe in his pub, The Sultan in Plaistow, east London.
